Those were the days!

"Beethoven is just not played like this anymore. In fact, in Mengelberg's day he was the only one to play it like this - at least based on available recordings. Tempos expand and contract during the course of a movement -- all very subjective -- and the phrasing of the Pilgrim's March in the 2nd movt. of the 7th must be heard to be believed.

The sound is quite good, by the way, easily up to the measure of late 40s early 50s lp recordings, and the price is right. It's visceral, heart-on-sleeve stuff, play it loud and have a ball!"
