Synopsis

Album Description
?Few Beethoven cycles have gotten off to as exciting and heady a start as this one!? ? Classics Today Having already set the music world on its ear with the revelatory first releases of his on-going Haydn Symphony cycle, young Maestro Fey turns his hand to tackle the early scores of the Titan himself. While some may thing that with all the recordings available of the ?Immortal Nine? there is little to be added, Fey and his unique hybrid ensemble, the Heidelberger Sinfoniker (featuring both period and modern instruments?) silence the nay-sayers from the first bar. All that remains to be said with a maiden voyage like this is: ?Bring on the Eroica!?

Power and Fun
Beethoven Junkie | NYC | 07/16/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"If you already have the Zinman Beethoven Symphonies (1999 -- Arte Nova), this recording is not going to break any new ground. I'd be hard pressed to choose between these and Zinman's as they are very similar in interpretation. If you only have the typical mid 20th century interpretatons such as those of von Karajan or Szell, then these and the Zinman are really going to change how you hear Beethoven. They have a lot of dynamic punch and use the faster tempos of the HIP movement that are so popular now. After listening to these and the Zinman, the slower tempos actually sound sluggish, boring and just plain wrong. What these recordings do have is slightly better sound quality than the Zinman recordings. I would love to hear a full cycle, but unfortunately, to date Fey has only recorded these and Nos. 4 and 6. If you want a full cycle and at a bargain price, then go for the Zinman. If you like picking and choosing performances then these and Fey's recording of the 4 and 6 are certainly great choices for modern symphony orchestra performances."
