CD Reviews

Guarneri Quartet always great
R. Evans | Seattle, WA USA | 12/16/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I just bought the complete Beethoven String Quartets in a boxed set with the Guarneri String Quartet. I've always had them on record (yes, I'm dating myself) as one of my favorite recordings of the Beethoven, and got the re-engineered CDs when they came out in the early 90s, but did NOT have the early quartets for some reason. Apparently the only way to get them now is in this complete boxed set, which is convenient, and I guess the old BMG sets of early, middle and late are now "collectible". I still think these are the best recordings of the Beethoven around. There are plenty of other great quartets, but just listen to op. 127 and see if you don't agree."
The second of the Guarneri's Beethoven cycles
Bill | Eastern Massachusetts | 03/31/2010
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Just to clarify - the Guarneri recorded the Beethoven quartets twice. The first was for RCA in the 60's; it was issued in three sets in the early 90's, I think, and then in a cheap boxed set a decade or so later. I believe that this earlier RCA cycle is out of print, although the parts show up on the used market.

This Brilliant Classics set is a later set, recorded for Philips in the early 90's. Sonically, it is an improvement, but I haven't listened to it side-by-side with the earlier set to comment on comparison."
