Synopsis

Naxos has arranged things right: two early sonatas and the three sets of variations for cello and piano on this disc, the other three sonatas on a companion (8.550478). Jeno Jandó, an amazingly prolific recording artist, takes the lead in this music much as Beethoven would have done in his time. I think he provides a little too much of the impulse in relation to the cello, which could have been played more assertively to better effect. This disc is still a good bargain introduction to the music, but for only a few bucks more you can get Mstislav Rostropovich/Sviatoslav Richter in the sonatas and Maurice Gendron/Claude Francaix in the variations (Philips 442 565-2). --Leslie Gerber
