Nikolaus Harnoncourt's approach to Beethoven ranges from supremely dramatic to just plain weird. Actually, that's true of just about everything that he conducts, but fortunately he's squarely in "supremely dramatic" mode in this excellent collection of overtures. These short works contain some of Beethoven's most exciting and exalted music--older listeners may recall the unforgettable impression that Egmont made at the televised memorial service for the Israeli athletes killed at the Munich Olympics. No one was better than Beethoven at finding ways to pack maximum meaning into a small space, and if you love the symphonies, you'll want to have these works too. --David Hurwitz

CD Reviews

Magnificent Sound
Matthew | New York | 02/09/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Beethoven's proverbial fire is evident in this masterful recording. After purchasing this recording, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe quickly accelerated to the my list of top 10 favorite orchestras. This recording also changed my negative views on Nikolaus Harnoncourt. The brass is quite full, but not to the point where it's surpasses Beethoven's time; the strings are quite articulate and dynamic in their style of execution; and the winds are as crisply colorful as could be. This is definitely a recording all admirers of Beethoven and overtures (especially those of Beethoven) should possess in their library. Harnoncourt and the COE most certainly resurrect Beethoven's spirit in this fantastic collection of overtures."

"You've seen enough detail in the first two reviews so I'll keep it short. Buy this CD - you won't regret it. C'est magnifique!"
