CD Reviews

Poor sound quality? Doh!
Fernand Raynaud | California, USA | 07/30/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"The only review so far said Hiroyuko was disappointed because of the "sound quality". I think there's some confusion here. The sound quality is just fine, the issue is probably the timbre of the instrument, which is NOT a piano, but an early 19th century instrument called a fortepiano. These have a different tone from modern pianos of the late 19th century to the present, and in addition are hard to tune and keep in shape. The "authenticity" buffs like to emphasize this, you know, primitive is beautiful and all that, making recorded fortepianos on occasion sound like far west saloon player-pianos. Picture idyllic organic plantations with appropriate technology, maybe Beethoven on kalimba?

It's not all THAT hard to get an even tone and a nice tuning on a Graf, and if the producers had bothered, the slight imperfections wouldn't alienate the general public. The fortepiano has a shorter sustain and a brighter sound, making it more demanding on passages where the performer lacks the Steinway's wall of pedal-sustain to hide behind. It's a different instrument, not a broken Yamaha.

These specific recordings are mercifully not as extreme in the "delapidated is beautiful" dept as many others. Serkin's performances are strong and way cool, and highly recommended. Download a couple just to savor the tone, imagine those little leather-covered hammers, and the keyboard that feels a lot like a DX7 synthesizer."
