Because of the fear of defection, Sviatoslav Richter did not tour outside of Russia until 1959. By this time both word of mouth and several recorded live performances had spread to the outside world, creating instant demand for his work. This Beethoven piece begins with a strings-only introduction and then changes with the entrance of the orchestra (with brass and timpani). By the end of this work, Beethoven finishes with a light, rapid passagework no doubt intended to display the composer's own virtuosity. This concerto was recorded during the Richter's triumphant 1960 tour of the U.S. He is accompanied on this superlative audiophile XRCD24 remastering by the Boston Symphony Orchestra under Charles Munch.
