Holt | los angeles, ca United States | 08/29/2007 (5 out of 5 stars) "This is an almost identical re-release of an already good sounding Beecham/London Philharmonic compilation Dutton put out in the 1990's. Since then Dutton has sought out newer masters from which to transfer, or vastly improved their methods. Either way, the new transfers have that extra 'bloom' and detail.
But I must draw special attention to the Debussy "Afternoon of a Faun". The extra quiet surfaces help make it one of the most magical and atmospheric recordings ever of this favorite show-piece. The recording date for the Debussy is the latest, but the rest of the album is vintage Beecham. Many of Beecham's records are referred to as 'vintage', but this is the real thing. These are recordings from the 1930's but do not show their age." |
