Synopsis

With the release of her debut Tanto Tempo in 2000, the Brazilian singer Bebel Gilberto and the late DJ Suba redefined the bossa nova sound. Her sophomore effort, produced by Marius de Vries, the soundmeister behind Madonna, Annie Lennox and Bjork, was recorded in Rio, Bahia, London and New York. Gilberto's cool contralto sings sweetly over synths, strings, percussion acoustic piano and horns. Daniel Jobim and Pedro Baby contributed compositions. Caetano Veloso's "Baby" features lyrics by Os Mutantes, and Carlinhos Brown's candomblé-cadenced, "Aganju" swings with a nod to Africa. Bebel's hushed vocals reveal the influences of her father, the legendary Joao Gilberto, and of her mother Miucha on the electro-bossa beats of "Winter." Ditto the ocean-breezed "O Caminho," with jazzy orchestrations and pianisms provided by Joao Donato. This disc aims for the ear rather than the hips, but don't be surprised if future remixes could flip that sonic script. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

CD Reviews

One of the easiest 5-star Reviews I've ever written.
G. Merritt | Boulder, CO | 04/19/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Beautiful (and still single) Brazilian chanteuse, Bebel Gilberto (1966), is the daughter of João Gilberto and singer Miúcha. Produced by Bjork-studio genius, Marius de Vries, Bebel's 2004 self-titled solo album is an intoxicating, haunting fusion of bossa nova, música popular brasileira, samba, and latina pop. (Having defined the genre with his 1964 album, Getz/Gilberto, one can almost hear João Gilberto's genetic influence in these songs.) Inquisitive minds must wonder how many babies have been conceived as a result of this sensual recording. The complete album tracklist includes:

1. Baby 3:49

2. Simplesmente 4:49

3. Aganjú 4:44

4. All Around 4:44

5. River Song 4:57

6. Every Day You've Been Away 4:05

7. Cada Beijo 4:26

8. O Caminho 2:59

9. Winter 4:19

10. Céu Distante 2:58

11. Jabuticaba 3:02

12. Next to You 2:54

Sick of what passes for 'Soft Rock'...Give Bebel a listen

"Drift back to a 70's sun-drenched beach in South America (a la' Girl from Imponema). An extremely refreshing change from US Top 40, Rock & Pop radio. Romantic, sensual, & alluring are the only ways to describe this gem.

Soft yet powerful melodies ooze from this soothing, uplifting sensual female crooner with a renowned Brazilian signature. Having grown up with 60's - 70's classic rock both Brit & US, this album shot straight through my heart and touched nerves I wasn't even aware of."
Subtle soundstage detail and lush sexy vocals

"Subtle

I recently upgraded my CD player and relistened to this album. The Beatles (probably George Martin), Steely Dan, Donald Fagen, Andreas Vollenweider, Spirit and others loved to put little sneaky things way back deep in the sound stage: crickets, little chimes, percussive special effects, a woman walking in a cave, etc etc. Very soft, low amplitude, Moving, swirling things. This album has them too! Little subtle sounds way back deep. Sounds that hang in the soundstage like fireflies on a summer night. Many of these are synthesizer sounds, and odd percussives.

Bebel's voice is soft, seductive and sexy, but the really great thing is the subtle stuff. Detail stuff my stereo couldn't resolve will recently. I had this album for a long time, since it came out and didn't appreciate it until now.

Buy it and listen or relisten, carefully. A world of detail.

Bebel really is the heir to the Bossa Nova world created by her father and Tom Jobim more than anyone else I've heard. Lush, sexy, throaty, breathy, little girlish. Close miked.

Very 3-space. in "All Around" and "Aganju" watercolor washes of Bebel float, overlap, coming from the right and left, near and far. A world of unknown percussion instuments: tamburim, surdon, nylon burmudas (sounds like something women wear!), moringa, cuisca, Timbau, styrofoam isopor, etc. In "Winter" sonic snowflakes hang in the air.

Really an audiophile dream.

"Everything I need, within me/

All the dreams I've dreamed are true/

All the starry skies, inside me/

When I'm next to you"

Come hear the starry skies within."
