(4 out of 5 stars)

"A somewhat brief look into what the Beach Boys were up to at their first recording sessions. I hear nervousness in their singing and in their muted instrumentation. The takes of 'Surfin' Safari' have lyrical variations from the Capitol version, and the guitar riffs are not as dominating. The 1962 Candix version of 'Surfer Girl' is very similar to the single version; it has a more intimate feel, but the sound is muddled. "Barbie" and "What Is a Young Girl Made Of" has Brian ironing out his trademark falsetto - the latter of which is the only Brian vocal I've found that sounds truly girlish. 'Lavender' sounds like a Four Freshmen cover..I'm not 100% sure. It's a cappella, and the Boys sound professional. "Studio Sessions 1961-1962" makes even their "Surfin' Safari" album sound overproduced. My only gripe is the sound quality and static on some of the tracks - but that's to be expected. If you're a big Brian Wilson fan like me, you'll drool over "Barbie" and "What Is a Young Girl Made Of"."
