CD Reviews

Surprisingly pleasant find
Jeffrey Newkirk | fl | 05/26/2004
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Comfy intimate eclectic good natured pop. Songs you can dive into and swim around in--or not, if you prefer to just have something on while you wash the dishes. Lots of nice puffy white clouds in the sky -- oh, wow, look at that car! Hey, let's go get a coffee and then go to the zoo--wow, that's exactly what I was thinking. Actually in all fairness this is pleasant and quite well done without being precious or saccharine. A real accomplishment. Smile--the sun is coming out."
Yes, even Holland has it's musical gems!

"Bauer (real name: Berend Dubbe) is on a small label here in Holland, and there seems to be hardly anyone who has heard of him (inside AND outside Holland, that is). What a shame! Bauer makes use of more traditional song-writing, uses loads of keyboards and a sampler, creating lovely, funny, sometimes silly, but always fun and really well-crafted songs. His influences skip from Beach Boys to Japanese Cornelius-like pop to easy listening; but the music never sounds too forced.
Highlights of Can't Stop Singing are 'Western Trail'; featuring a banjo sample and funny lyrics about ski-ing down crooked noses and buying stuff at IKEA, the brilliant and instant classic 'Masterminds' and the charming 'Dunce', sung by Bauer's girlfriend Sonja; who has a great, soothing voice that fits the music and Berend's voice perfectly. In between the songs there are short ditties like 'Feel The New Wave' and 'Fan'; which aren't just obnoxious, useless filler but actually are just cool bridges to every next song.
There isn't much REALLY good music coming from Holland; the Belgians are better in that kind of stuff, for some reason, but Bauer is the only one that is the exception to the rule. Can't Stop Singing is a must-have; just buy it, you can't go wrong"
