Wonderful anthology of Barber first recordings!!!!
Darin Tysdal | Bloomington, MN 55420 | 06/25/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"When my wife and I were traveling to Omaha, Nebraska, I suddenly had an urge to listen to the Barber 1st Symphony. I hadn't packed one in my music collection for the trip, so I visited a local cd store, and I ran into this anthology. I was very impressed by the range of works and the performers. I still wonder how much it takes to get the rights for another label to reproduce other label's material. I haven't heard the SONY transfer of Bruno Walter's First Symphony, but it sounds wonderful here. The only quibble (besides the sound, but all of these performances are not high fidelity-that is not the attraction of this disc) is Walter slows the tempo towards the end of the Scherzo where it says in the score "stringendo", to accelerate. Perhaps Barber revised this spot in the score later on. Along with the famous "Adagio" recorded by Arturo Toscanini, we have the Capricorn Concerto with Mitch Miller on oboe (or, in this capacity, Mitchell Miller), and Barber himself singing "Dover Beach" quite well. Ormandy's tempo for the middle section of the first essay is quite fast, quite a jolt. The cello sonata gets a gutsy, big-boned performance. It is nice to see such a comprehensive survey of Barber's music and how it was performed so close to it's premiere. We are very lucky."
