An unfulfilled promise

"barbara randolph had a gutsy, earthy voice that was not well-served by the songs she was given to record.

if ever an artist needed the songwriting talents of a barbara acklin or the producing magic of an arif mardin, it was barbara randolph. as i think on this disc, i cannot think of one song that works for her. but maybe one day it will grow on me.

as of late may of 2008, i took this cd and some others on a road trip. it still hasn't grown on me. but it's trying.

randolph was given a wide range of material to try during her short time at motown. and each song, while not intended for her, shows she was a capable and even daring singer. she covers many tunes associated with mary wells, most notably 'what's easy for two', and she does what was the umpteenth cover of the bachrach-david classic 'the look of love'. the production values are good for both but still nothing new comes from either interpretation.

then she has one curiosity. two songs that were done by diana ross as filler for 'reflections' and 'everything is everything' are done by her. the former is smokey robinson's 'bah-bah-bah'. which is ten times more soulful when randolph does it. and 'my place' has new lyrics as 'another day, another way' and it is definitely a different experience. it has the rollicking, churchy feel that some of the best b-sides and fillers of motown that were sung by the men, the vandellas and mary wells."

"Besides Barbara's Solo Hit " I've Got A Feeling ", there's not much else here to hold my interest. I gambled.......and lost !"
