Barbara la merveilleuse

"I do not agree with Mister Hayden, Barbara is well-known from japan to Canada wher she sells a lot of records. But it is true that she is little-known in english-speaking countries.
Barbara is the main female songwriter ot the sixties-seventies in France. She was the first woman to write her own stuff and to play piano on stage. The stage was her real sacred world. I have seen many artists but Barbara had a unique presence, extremely elegant, strange, poetical. She was "un monstre sacré", and the way she sang "le soleil noir" or "le mal de vivre" behind her piano was unforgettable. No equivalent on the american world. Much more subtle than Piaf or Brel. Compared with her, Gainsbourg was just nothing on stage, nothing at all. He toured once with her once but soon had to give up because only Barbara got success and even triumph. No other artist wrote as well as she did about spleen, love and death. A real, real artist. Records I may recommend are : "la louve", "l'album à la rose", "la fleur d'amour", "l'aigle noir", "le mal de vivre" (barbara numéro deux). if you only want to buy one record , get master 1. But please, do forget her last record, "barbara " released in 96. broken voice, no more inspiration, do forget it. barbara wrote so many masterpieces that she is forgiven. On www.amazon.fr , www.amazon.ca, www.amazon.de, you may find a bigger choice of her records."

"l'oeuvre magistrale de Barbara dans toute sa splendeur depuis la sobriété de l'album à la rose jusqu'à la splendeur orchestrale de la louve. Un chef-d'oeuvre : a master-piece"

"I never write a review so fast, but my immense pleasant surprise forces me to. I must admit though, that I am a bit ashamed. I know French popular music pretty well for more than 40 years and among my favorite singers there are numerous French Greats such as Aznavour, Piaf, Joe Dassin, Mireille Mathieu to name a few. For some reason all this years she escaped me completely and comes across her by chance thanks to fellow reviewer on Amazon.

In short, if you like unassuming, beautiful music of chansoniers such as Brel, George Moustaki (his famous Ma Liberte), I can guaranty you will enjoy this CD beyond measure.

On the end albeit a little frivolous point, but it seems to me that if she had a stage name like Helen D'Avingnon or any other uniquely French sounding stage name instead of Barbara, she might have been much more widely known than she is.

And she most certainly deserves MUCH more wide acclaim.

I am anticipating to listen to this CD many, many time in coming months (which happens to very few CDs in my very vast collection)

P.S. Also, if you happen to know French, you will appreciate highly her lyrics as well."
