CD Reviews

A Penguin guide rosette... for good reasons!
05/30/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Roberts has long been considered one of Britain's finest pianists. His performances here of Bach's Partitas are astoundingly fresh and beautiful. Recording took place in 2000, and its quality is also first rate. These two CDs were rewarded the Penguin classical Guide's "rosette" which indicates recordings of exceptionally high quality. That is certainly the case here."
Nicely done

(5 out of 5 stars)

"It is not an "exuberant" rendition, but is definitely very-well enunciated. The focus is on the original music, not its interpretation. The composer's intent comes to the front, while the performer is in the background -- exactly what I'd like to see in recordings."
Even better than Hewitt's version
Stephen Grabow | Lawrence, Kansas | 02/11/2010
(5 out of 5 stars)

"While I don't always agree with Penguin's Rosette awards for certain recordings, they are right on the mark with this superb recording of Bach's Six great Partitas. My previous experience was with Angela Hewitt's excellent recording on Hyperion; but this is even better in that there is softer pedalling and a clearer sound to the piano. I now have two fine versions and like the contrast between their two styles, but I give the edge to Roberts."
