This first-rate set of Brandenburg Concertos (with its companion containing Concertos 1, 2, and 3) offers stylish, mostly modern-instrument performances that remain faithful to the spirit of Bach's scores--recorders are used in No. 4, harpsichord in No. 5, and viols in No. 6--while exploiting the brilliant timbre of 20th century strings. In 1980, Sir Neville Marriner was one of the gods of Baroque and classical period music, and this disc shows why. --David Vernier

The perfect gift

"I had the record sent as a gift to my daughter who had never heard any of the Brandenburg Concerti--and considered Bach "square." I received an ecstatic long e-mail after she heard this performance. "I'm in love!" she wrote. "I absolutely love this record. I listen to it over and over. It sounds like bells and birds!I didn't understand that Bach's music was like this.""
Simply Sublime

"During the holiday season one year, while everyone was away and I was getting ready to move away from my old college town, I discovered one of my roomates classical recordings and played it louder than any heavy metal enthusiast in mid-winter.

This is my favorite classical recording and the greatest of these is Concerto No. 3 in G, tracks 8-10, especially 8 and 10. The allegro sends my spirit above the clouds.

Listen to this and it will affect your view of music and the world.

Bach had the greatest gift - simply sublime!"
