Phat Jam in Milano, the first release on Shepp's new label, Dawn of Freedom, was recorded live in November 2007 and features Napoleon Maddox on vocals and beatbox, Oliver Lake and Cochemea Gastelum on saxophones, Joe Fonda on bass and Hamid Drake on drums. Shepp is a living jazz legend. He started playing jazz in the early 60's and continues to dazzle audiences around the world playing tenor saxophone and piano, accompanied by his soulful voice. Napoleon Maddox, the primary vocalist on this release, is a rap-hip hop artist from the Midwest.
