Synopsis

These are all of Janácek's major piano works. Commentators argue endlessly about whether a performer's nationality affects the way he or she plays music. I'll say that, with music so completely based on the speech rhythms of the composer's native language, a Czech player of Janácek's music has an automatic advantage, one thoroughly exploited by Radoslav Kvapil. These are all enigmatic, mysterious pieces based on Janácek's late folk-influenced idiom. The music isn't easy to get acquainted with--although Kvapil's expressive playing helps greatly. But once you get to know this music, I think you will find it unique and extremely moving. --Leslie Gerber

"For many of us, we are familiar with Janacek either through his operas, or through the Sinfonietta/Taras Bulba/Violin Concerto. This disc will give you another reason to love his music. If Janacek's piano works are unfamiliar, this admirable disc will make you wonder why they are not more popular. "On An Overgorwn Path" is truly remarkable; it is like reading Chekov stories. The entire emotional palatte is used here, and Mr. Kvapil plays it as one who is intimately familiar with all facets of the music. The Sonata is one of the most powerful piano sonatas of the century. It's hard for me to be objective about it, and it may not be for everyone's taste. It is raw emotion, and definitely not background music! This recording is perhaps hampered by it's title. Sounds like a card catalogue listing. Please don't let that put you off, because it is a truly remarkable disc. It's getting old and may become a bit hard to find, but it is certainly worth the effort to track it down. A truly top-notch recording!"
