Synopsis

Product Description
Anita Carter is the great 'lost' voice of Nashville. The Appalachian siren, who once heard will break your heart and mend your soul. Daughter of the legendary Mother Maybelle Carter and sister to the exalted June Carter Cash, Anita sang, played (a mean upright bass) and recorded her entire life (solo, in duet and with The Carter Family). Featured here are rare and previously un-reissued sides and 45 only cuts from her mid-1960s and early 1970s tenures with RCA Victor and Columbia Records. 28 track deluxe collector's edition remastered with love and care from the original master tapes including exclusive liner notes and rare photos.

CD Reviews

Finally Some Carter Family Reissued

(5 out of 5 stars)

"The Anita Carter "Songbird" CD is an excellent choice as a "Best of" disc. All of Anita's solo tracks have been previously released by Bear-Family Records of Germany on the 7-CD set "Appalachain Angel." I applaud the producing company of this disc (Omni) for finally bringing out some of the previously-unreleased on Compact Disc Carter Family songs from the Travelin' Minstrel Band (1972). The harmonies on these songs are just beautiful, featuring Mother Maybelle, June, Helen and Anita. Unfortunately, Omni left off three songs from the Travelin' Minstrel Band album and only added one track (Sweet Memories) from the Carter's "Three Generations" (1974) album. All of the songs on the Songbird CD are excellent, featuring Anita's voice. For the diehard collector, you'll need to purchase this one to fill out the Carter Family void in your collection. For the casual listener, I recommend purchasing this disc, along with Bear-Family's single disc of Anita Carter, "Ring of Fire." And, if you like what you hear, step up to the plate and purchase the 7-CD boxset and you won't be disappointed.

I hope that Omni or other companies reading this will follow suit with this album and release the beautiful albums of the newer Carter Family on CD, including the rest of the Travelin Minstrel Band, Three Generations, I Walk The Line (Best of), The Carter Family album and The Country Album."
