CD Reviews

Great Troilo from '50s
msafier | Buenos Aires, ---- Argentina | 02/13/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"As the top exponent of Tango, Anibal Troilo leading his orchestra never stopped in evolutioning. These recordings come from the mid 50's, when his band recorded for the argentinian label TK (1950 to 1956). The company has long been defunct, and since then legal affairs have put the original master tapes well far from any other record company to purchase the rights and reissue them. So the tracks on this CD (as any other from this label and period) do not come from original masters, so the sound is always very variable from one tune to other and not always they are good quality in sound. Nevertheless, here you will able to appreciate what I consider Troilo's most revolutionary period, when he was changing from being and dance band with high musical level to a very high musical level band with some dance rythm. Compelling are the orchestral performanbces of Astor Piazzolla's "Triunfal" (hear the notable introduction played by the piano and doublebass), "Tecleando" (by Carlos Figari, then the orchestra's pianist), "Corralera", "Orlando Goñi" (the great tango by Alfredo Gobbi in memoriam the first Anibal Troilo's orchestra pianist, who reinvented the piano playing in tango), and the like. Equally of high level are the vocal tracks. Hear the first recordings made by Roberto Goyeneche as offical singer of Troilo in 1956 and also by Angel Cardenas from that very year(a great performance is "Vamos, Vamos Zaino Viejo"). Great performances then, from the greatest tango orchestra of all times and by the greatest bandoneonist, who also was a giant as band leader, melting popular and high musical tastes."
