Synopsis

Album Description
Pianist Andrew Armstrong performs three Russian masterpieces of the late-Romantic/early-Modern era: Mussorgsky's celebrated Pictures at an Exhibition from 1874, in its original piano-solo form, as well as two drastically contrasting sonatas from 1913 by Rachmaninov and Scriabin. Rachmaninov's Second Piano Sonata, in its original 1913 version, is one of the great jewels of High Romanticism while Scriabin's Ninth Piano Sonata, the Black Mass was way ahead of its time with its daring harmonic setting and dimension.
