The forgotten Gem: Maria Luisa Anido
Aaron Larget-Caplan | Cambridge, MA | 05/24/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"An album of Segovia and Anido should be in every home that has ears. Two artists of greater sensibility and technical achievement exist not on the guitar.

The Segovia selection demonstrate his strengths and loves in music: Spanish, lute arrangements, works written for him. Though the performance practice have changed radically, I find many a modern performance of early music could be infused with a good dose of "Segovia" for added life. His sound, as always, is impeccable.

The gem of the album is Maria Luisa Anido. Her romantic stylings fit beautifully with the selections and her arrangements of standard repertoire deserve a listening and a nod just for being so unique. No one plays like her. The romantic music is her strength.

Her Recuerdos and Sueño by Tarrega are invigorating and awe inspiring. She has complete control of rhythm, sound, dynamic and technique. To hear someone play with such a reserve is a blessing. I look forward to hearing more from her."
