Synopsis

Product Description
There?s a reason reveille is played on the trumpet instead of the bassoon; the trumpet commands attention, its stentorian voice rising above all. But the trumpet can also be soulful and quiet, even playful and, with its various mutes, can create many different moods in both classical music and jazz. This new release features world premiere recordings of distinctive American works for trumpet and orchestra, alternately heroic, romantic, introspective and, in Frederick Tillis? work based on the spiritual Sinner, Please Don?t Let this Harvest Past, redolent of African-American folk traditions, but cast in a modern, jazz context. Paul Neebe, acclaimed as both a solo player and orchestral musician, has made a commitment to American contemporary music. He is currently Principal Trumpet of the Roanoke Symphony, the Charlottesville Symphony and the Wintergreen Festival Orchestra in Virginia. He is a graduate of both Juilliard and the Catholic University of America.

CD Reviews

Buy it for the Roskott concerto
Thomas J. Teisberg | Charlottesville, VA United States | 05/07/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"It's worth buying this CD for the Roskott concerto alone. I had heard this concerto exactly once before in a concert, and had not particularly liked it. But I often have felt that way about a piece of music that later becomes a favorite after I hear it a few times. This happened with the Roskott concerto. It is real music - moving music. I've listened to it 10-20 times in the last several days, and I just like it more each time. I don't mean to imply that the other pieces on the CD are throwaways - they're not - but the Roskott concerto really hooked me.

Neebe's trumpet performance is top notch. I listen to a lot of trumpet and brass quintet music, most all of it recorded by famous name trumpeters and quintets. Neebe is not a famous name, but his performance on this CD is second to none. Truth is, if I was stranded on a desert island and could take just one trumpet CD with me, this is the one I would want to have.

Carl Roskott's trumpet concerto is amazing

"I became a big admirer of conductor Carl Roskott's music after listening to this concerto. He was actually my conducting teacher at the University of Virginia and he inspired us all. About 4' 35'' into the first movement of his concerto, you will hear one of the most gorgeous melodies you will ever hear. The second movement is very moving. You will fall in love with this movement. Sheldon Morgenstern, who was conductor Roskott's teacher wrote in his well-rated book "No Vivaldi in the Garage:.." the following: "in my view Carl Roskott is the most innately gifted student ever to have attended EMF, he went on to win major award at the..."

I never really had a great fond for trumpet music but this CD made me really like it a lot! he is a great trumpet teacher and a performer!
