CD Reviews

Invaluable
10/07/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"The Great Amália, The Only One of such stature in her small country, died today, October 6, 1999. She'll buried Friday, Oct.8, but word is that after the general election scheduled for Sunday, arrangements will be made for her body to be moved to the Jerónimos Monastery, burial place of famous Portuguese like Vasco da Gama and Luiz de Camões, three of whose poems she sang."
A Wonderful Collection

"A wonderful compilation of Amalia Rodrigues early recordings. Some songs do not have the clarity of later recordings, however, her voice is still in the forefront of each song. I truly enjoy listening to Amalia and as a small book is enclosed in this CD, reading a little about her. I am thankful for her beautiful voice and the privilege to enjoy it."
The quality of a voice, the freshness of a great singer.

"These four CDs, also sold individually, date back to 1952, 1953, and until being remastered and recovered most of the tracks had been virtually lost. The difficulty in recovering most of them still shows in some. But almost 50 years after being released these records constitute today an invaluable repertoire and a remarkable example of Amália's powers and artistry, even before her great international success. The songs are almost all classical fados, but the records also include some of the so-called "fado-canção" (fado-song), which Amália introduced, accompanied by an orchestra. Included are most of Amália's early successes, many of them which are today important classical fados, sung ever and ever again by Amália herself and other singers. But the records bring to us all the freshness of Amália's voice and her interpretative powers, the soulfulness and depth of fado allied with the beautiful, strong and vibrant colloratura of Amália's unique voice and artistry. A lovely tribute to a great, great singer."
