Terrific Interpretation
Avid Reader | Franklin, Tn | 03/04/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"There may be more than a grain of truth in the old adage that it takes a Pole to perform Chopin (or German for Bach, Argentine for Piazzallo, etc). In this case it we are talking about the eccentric genius, Scriabin [CKPIABYH in Cyrillic] and Russian interpreters. In all the debate over the various nationalistic piano "schools", it is impossible to overlook the one that can trace its roots directly to its founders - the Russian. Marta Deyanova is a proud member though she does venture far afield (Mozart). This performance contains all the pathos one hopes to find in a Scriabin recording. The composer specialized in miniature works -the preludes, poems and mazurkas. He has endowed his music with magic as they slowly open to the listener like a bloom emerging in the sun. If a performer has both the professional and emotive skill, technical aspects disappear and one hears the desired effect. Deyanova understands this and plays accordingly, invariably lyrical and moody with just a slight hint of feverishness at the right moments. This CD is for solitude and quiet time, a reverie that you will undoubtedly enjoy."
