Tatoos Your Heart

"Hay un dicho en Espanol/there is a saying in Spanish: La fruta no cay lejos del arbol/The fruit doesn't fall far from the tree. No more true words could fit in describing Alejandro Fernandez and his papa, Vicente Fernandez. Alejandro does a marvelous job interpreting rancheras, boleros y huapangoes. His father must be proud since he was the "king" interpreter of Mexicano rancheras of his generation. I love this CD because it has superb qualities of production, an excellent selection and array of music and an accompanying booklet with lyrics included. The musical accompanyment meshes perfectly with Alejandro's strong, perfectly annunciated, velvety vocals. Nothing is forced as the music flows effortlessly as if Alejandro and the musicians just got together for a session of beautiful music at the hacienda. Always in harmony, never straining in range, Alejandro's voice dominates but the fine musicianship invites a listen as well. There are no distractions or intrusions by solos, it is woven together perfectly. The mariachi sound only lends to the totality of the music. My favorite track is "Amante Torero" as Alejandro draws interesting analogies between love and the taurino world. The sensual imagery he conjures in this song is amazing, the artistry of the ruedo and the love of a woman are seemingly unlike but he creates a perfect picture. He concludes the song by singing "Mereces que te indulte con mis besos/You deserved your life spared with my kisses". A fitting and glorious end for both parteners. Alejandro is at his finest though when he sings the more tradional boleros like "Mentirosos", a classic story of love gone bad, "No volviran ni para ti, ni para mi(the beautiful moments)/They will not return for you, nor for me". Even though it is a sad reflection of love gone stale the music is so wonderful and heartfelt that one just appreciates the beauty of the song. The title track "Mi verdad" is upbeat, with flute and violin ala estilo huapango. A happy song that dances off the player and gets you taping your feet and thigh. All in all there is not a weak moment on this stellar CD. I bought this because I respect the opinion of Alejandra Vernon and she is his number one fan. I remember a conversation I had with some tios 15 years ago about who would be the next king of rancheros and boleros. Who would carry the tradition of Jose Alfredo Jimenez, Jorge Negrete, Javier Solis, Vicente Fernandez and others? At the time Alejandro was dismaissed as too young. Forget it, he has grown to be the man of a new generation, carrying the torch proudly of Mexican rancheros and boleros for that yet unknown heir. Alejandro Fernadez es el nuevo rey."

"alejandro fernandez really knows how to pour out his soul through music. he sings ballads, rancheras. all songs with a uniqueness to them. all of the songs are nice and pleasing to the ear. to me his best song is "loco" which just makes me think about my girlfriend when i hear it. this is real music unlike those artists who sing pop and call their music latin! they dont even sing in spanish for christ sake! anyways, this album deserves to be in your collection. try it if you dont listen to this type of music. youll like it."
