Rare Jolson Sides are Exceptional
Roger J Stone Jr | Washington, DC USA | 07/03/2000
(4 out of 5 stars)

"These are not the re-recordings done in 1950 for the Jolson Story and released by Decca but earlier recordings, so sound quality is not up to even 1950's standards, however the inclusion of rare titles such as "Miami","Golden Gate" and "I'm Stepping Out" truly capture the excitement and electricity of "the World's Greatest Entertainer"If you are tired of the constantly recycled Decca tracks, great as they are, and are looking for earlier Jolson recordings that are still better than the scratchy recordings from the late teens and early 20's, this album is for you."
Early Jolson
Chris Hall | Minneapolis, MN | 06/25/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I absolutely agree with the earlier reviewer re. these earlier recordings vs the more common Decca recordings. One thing I want to mention is the difference in the orchestration of these earlier versions of Jolson standards - it is dramatic when compared with the Decca releases, and very interesting to compare the two. Also, it seems that some are acoustic vs. electronic recordings, which gives you an idea of the sheer power of Jolson's voice - amazing."
