CD Reviews

The Best Mexican Composer Ever!
Juan C. Hermida | San Diego, CA | 10/27/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Agustin Lara is without a doubt the best and most prolific author of Mexican music. He was born Mexico City, but he used to say he was from Veracruz where he was raised. His music soft, sad, but yet temperamental combines the strong scent of the piano keys, whit the mellow chords of the violins. His voice was not a gifted one, but has style and expresses wonderfully his lines. He wrote many of his compositions at his beloved "Casita Blanca" (Little White House) at the beautiful Veracruz Port where he used to live with his wife Maria Felix. The house has a wonderful view of the sea that had a big influence in his inspiration This CD is a must have to all those who love Latin music, and have good taste for old, but yet un perishable music"
Poetic Ballads That Touch Your Soul & Reach Your Heart!
Jana L. Perskie | New York, NY USA | 07/04/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Agustin Lara was one of the world's, and certainly Mexico's, greatest and most prolific composers. He wrote over 200 popular songs, mostly ballads and boleros, including the very famous "Granada." There is a statue of Lara in Mexico City with the inscription, "A Mexican Who Sang To The Entire World." With this extraordinary collection, we have the opportunity to hear Sr. Lara sing his own songs with so much expression - longing, sadness, and love - that you do not have to speak Spanish to experience the meaning and feel the passion. If you are a Spanish speaker, so much the better, for the lyrics to the songs collected here are some of his most poetic. He accompanies himself on the piano. Some of my favorites include: the very beautiful "Noche de Ronda," "Solamente Una Vez," and "Maria Bonita." The classic and mellow sounds of "Farolito," "Rosa," "Vera Cruz," and the piquant "Amor de Mis Amores" are pure delight.I am a great admirer of Agustin Lara's great talent and listen to this CD frequently...to mellow-out and dream of, and remember romantic evenings. Highly recommended!"
