In 2000, the American Film Institute selected the irreverent cross-dressing farce of director Billy Wilder and writer I.A.L. Diamond as the funniest movie ever made. The film's period-evoking prowess (Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis play musicians who witness Chicago's infamous St. Valentine's Day Massacre, then disguise themselves as women to flee with an all-girl band featuring Marilyn Monroe) is one of the key elements to its success, with composer Adolph Deutsch's manic pastiche of 20's hot jazz and pop its perfect musical foil. CD Reviews

What a rip off!

"In the original CD release from Rykodisc, we got music aplenty but sloppy sound quality. In this brand new rerelease under a new label, we get better sound quality but less tracks! ARRGH!!

And as if to add insult to injury, the new cover art is terrible--this does NOT look like Marilyn Monroe is the least! It may seem a slight complaint to some, but I loved the cover art of Rykodisc's release much better.

Looks like we'll all have to wait for the next label to pick this one up to do a better job. Better luck next time, I suppose... hopefully the old saying about three being a charm is correct...

"Varese Records presents the soundtrack to Billy Wilder's classic comedy "Some Like It Hot", featuring Tony Curtis as Joe, Jack Lemmon as Jerry a couple of musicians on the lamb, George Raft as Spats Columbo the mob boss, Pat O'Brien as agent Mulligan and what was one of her best performances Marilyn Monroe as Sugar Kane lead singer of Sweet Sue's Band ~ but the scene stealer in this film is vaudevillian Joe E. Brown as millionaire Osgood Fielding, who has fallen in love with Daphne (Jack Lemmon in disguise) ~ the score by composer and conductor Adolph Deutsch skillfully captures the times of the late '20s.

Many tunes of the period are outstanding ~ but the fun begins with solos by Miss Monroe, the songs "RUNNIN' WILD", I WANNA BE LOVED BY YOU" and "I'M THRU WITH LOVE", her performances in this film have become legendary, she was at the peak of her career in 1959. Just close your eyes and listen to each cue, you can still see the charm, comedy and the cross-dressing humor that made us laugh then and remains so fresh today...gotta love it!
