CD Reviews

Coffeshop music ala Mexicana

"I'd like to think of myself as a big Yuri admirer..yet this record left me puzzled and at times, sad.

On this recording, Guillermo Gil has joined together Mijares and Yuri, two of Mexico's biggest pop sensations of the 80's who transcended to adult contemporary in the 90's and accompanies them with a subtle piano arrangement in the current "cover songs" phenomenon that's sweeping the music world. Curiously enough, both were on EMI in their Heyday and now both are on Sony BMG. The music is very lowkey, almost faint and all we get are torchsong covers of many artists.

Though I love Yuri, I must express that her voice and Mijares don't mix well, in my humble opinion. Yuri has many layers and can adapt to any style including this one, but Mijares's gruff voice gets monotonous immediately and murders any emotion that was left on these otherwise dull songs. Yuri is the real key in these recordings.

That being said....the songs feature Mijares more! I don't understand this. For the reasons stated above, it seems unfair to Yuri and confusing to the listener to have to listen to his boring vocals. The only song that's sung (mostly) by her alone is "Amandote".

But in the end, this is a joint venture that will work out for both of them. It would have been alot better if they recorded songs separately, or even released a double album. A torchsong Yuri CD would have been heavenly. Yet we must settle for a CD that's half good and half confusing. No offense to Mijares, but he really can't hold anything to the talented Yuri, one of Mexico's most talented pop singers."
Another number one for Yuri!

"Two of the best mexican singers Yuri and Mijares, come toguether to take us back in time by singing famous songs from other great exponents as well as brand new songs. Great quality, great vocals... the cd reached number one for several weeks and Yuri's having a great moment in her career by being the host of Objetivo Fama (a reality contest for singers ) .. This is an item worth your time and your money. Get it while it lasts!!"
