Synopsis

Alban Berg (1885-1935) found himself between a rock and a hard space: the rock was Gustav Mahler's imposing reputation and Arnold Schoenberg's rising star in German music. Berg manages to steer carefully between the two (the breakout of World War One wasn't a help either). Berg's music has its own atonal signatures (as in Seven Early Songs) that manage to pay homage to Mahler rather than worship him outright. More mature is Three Pieces for Orchestra where his own sense of melody illuminates the Schoenbergian darkness of those years in Germany--in fact, more melody than you'd suspect. Highly recommended. --Paul Cook
