(5 out of 5 stars)

"The first cantata, BWV 131 Aus der Tiefen in this group is one of Bach's earliest cantatas he wrote and this recording is worth it for this performance alone. The use of the oboe in the Cantata coupled with the beautiful flowing aria/chorus combinations creates a remarkable musical work. The aria/chorus "Meine Seele" performed by Howard Crook is especially well done.

Stylistically very similar to one of Bach's other remarkable early Cantatas BWV 4 "Christ lag en todesbanden", Bach takes the structures and harmonies of forbears such as Buxtehude and his relatives such as Johann Christoph Bach and applies them with a power and harmonic richness that swamps his precursors.

Cantatas BWV 73 and 105 are typical cantatas from Bach's more mature period. Many fine arias in these with very complex melodies and harmonies. The interplay of an oboe and the strings is one of the hallmarks of these cantatas.

If you can get your hands on this CD, I recommend it, especially for Cantata BWV 131.
