CD Reviews

Marvelettes gave Motown it's first #1 record
Nat Tombrello | Hoover, Alabama | 11/11/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"In the 60's Motown had 3 girl groups. The Marvelettes were on
Tamla. Martha and the Vandellas were on Gordy and The Supremes
were on the Motown label. The Marvelettes were the first girl
group to come from Motown. They were there at the beginning
with the Miracles and Mary Wells. The Supremes were very
commercial,Martha and the Vandellas very aggressive and
easy to dance to. The Marvelettes had a variety of styles of
music. There are several greatest hits packages by the Marvelettes and this is the best. The group started out with
5 members-then 4 and at it's best when it was 3. They gave
Motown it's first #1 record in "Please Mr. Postman" The
Marvelettes actually had two lead singers. Gladys Horton
sang lead on hits such as "Please Mr. Postman","Playboy", and
"Too Many Fish in the Sea" Then Wanda Young took over lead
vocals and brought the group in a whole new direction. This
is when Smokey Robinson wrote and produced their songs as
he did with Mary Wells. Wanda Young sang lead on such hits as
"Don't Mess With Bill", "Danger Heartbreak Dead Ahead", "You're
My Remedy","The Hunter Gets Captured By the Game", and "I'll
Keep Holding On" (one of Motown's best songs) and "My Baby Must
Be a Magician" She gave the group a more polished sophsicated
sound. Both singers were excellent. Their music was fun, had
great lyrics and melodies. Do yourself a favor and buy this
out of print CD. The Marvelettes Rule in my opinion."
Marvelettes gave Motown it's first #1 single

"There were 3 girl groups on Motown in the 60's- The Marvelettes
on Tamla-Martha and the Vandellas on Gordy and of course the
Supremes on Motown. The Marvelettes were there at the beginning
with the Miracle and Mary Wells. They started out with 5 members- then 4 and then 3. They gave Motown it's first #1
hit in "Please Mr. Postman" The Supremes were commercial
and Martha and the Vandellas were agressive but the Marvelettes
were the ultimate girl group. They had a variety of styles. There are many packages of greatest hits for them but this is
the best one. It sounds great. There were 2 lead singers for
the Marvelettes-Gladys Horton who sung led on songs such as
"Please Mr. Postman", "Playboy", "Too Many Fish in the Sea"
Then Wanda Young became led singer and took them to another
level some of her songs are the best- "Don't Mess With Bill',
"Danger Heartbreak Dead Ahead","I'll Keeo on Holding On" (what
a masterpiece), "The Hunter Gets Captured By the Game", and
"My Baby Must Be A Magician" Smokey Robinson wrote most of
their songs and he produced their records as he did Mary Wells.
I will sum up the Marvelttes in the title of one of their best
CD's they were Sophiscated Soul. Their songs were fun and had
a different sound. They were the ultimate girl group. This CD
is no longer available but believe me from someone who knows
this is the best greatest hit package for them. Buy it and
feel good--their music is so positive and I think Motown's
most under rated group."
