Product Description
&nbspMany today are just discovering the genius of John Philip Sousa. And what better way than with these fresh digital recordings performed by the world class band he once commanded. The deep roots that exist between Sousa and the Marine band date back over a century when he led them for 12 years. This spiritual bond is reflected in these brilliant recordings which capture the essence of Sousa.     &nbsp"Military Marches of John Philip Sousa ? Complete Collection Volume 2" comprises of new digital recordings of John Sousa?s brilliant marches. It is the United States Marine Band's ("The President's Own") first comprehensive collection of Sousa's marches since the 1970s. The recordings were initiated by Director Col. Jason K. Fettig. The collection is presented in chronological order.     &nbspThis second volume double CD contains 40 new digital recordings. The recordings were done in 2016/2018 and cover all 40 marches composed between 1889 and 1916. CD1 contains Sousa's 20 marches (spanning the years 1889-1898), and CD2 contains his next 20 marches, spanning the years 1899 to 1916, when Sousa was Director of the Marine Band. The musical score of each march has been carefully edited and corrected by Col. Fettig and Music Production Chief Master Gunnery Sgt. Donald Patterson using some of the earliest known publications and incorporate performance practices employed by the Marine Band that are modeled on those of "The March King" himself. The recordings in this collection capture how Sousa himself would have performed them.     &nbspMany of the marches in this set of ?Military Marches of John Philip Sousa ? Complete Collection? were staples in Sousa?s regular concert repertoire and were included in the ?Encore Books? used by the Sousa Band. A complete set of his Encore Books resides in the U.S. Marine Band Library and Archives and are referenced extensively by the Marine Band not only as a guide for some of Sousa?s special performance practice, but also to ascertain the exact instrumentation he employed in his own performances of his marches. ?Military Marches of John Philip Sousa ? Complete Collection? appears in chronological order and is based on some of the earliest known sources for each composition. Additionally, the alterations traditionally employed by the United States Marine Band in performance are incorporated throughout; either those specifically documented by Sousa?s musicians or changes modeled on the customary practices of ?The March King.?
