Opened this account, then realized I had to pay, and want to close it but can't find how to do that.

Under the "Help Center" tab, click "Contact Us" and send them a message with a request to cancel your account. Should you change your mind later, you can contact them again and they'll reopen it.

I'm really curious and puzzled. Besides postage to mail CDs out (in order to receive credits), what did you see that you have to pay?

There is a 49 cent fee for each request.
