Like many artists, writers, and thinkers, Canadian pianist Glenn Gould appreciated solitude as a practical necessary and a boon to his creative work. But Gould went farther than cultivating solitude as a creative tool. Soon after renouncing the public concert circuit, Gould hit upon a work that would express his interest in solitude, an audio documentary that would eventually become The Solitude Trilogy. "The Idea of North," the first part of the trilogy, was intended at the time to stand on its own, with the trilogy evolving with Gould's enthusiasm. It was described by Gould as a "radio documentary" and was based on the narratives of five individuals who had directly experienced the north of Canada. |

Beethoven's monumental String Quartet Op. 130 with its original conclusion the "Grosse Fuge" Op. 133, plus Haydn's String Quartet in C, Op. 4/2 (one of the Tost Quartets). Played by the Lindsay String Quartet. This is a wonderful compilation by the leading British string quartet, originally released on ASV recordings, now selected by BBC Music. I'm listing it only because I have all three pieces performed by the Lindsays on other discs. |

Not in the Swap database but available at Amazon where 18 reviewers gave it 4.5 stars, this CD is in mint condition. Yours for 1 credit. Here is the Amazon review: This was only the second recording for the Guitar Trio, coming a full 16 years after 1980's Friday Night in San Francisco, but it's a fitting sequel. Paco De Lucia, Al Di Meola, and John McLaughlin once again demonstrate extraordinary virtuosity, accelerated runs tumbling over one another until identities blur. Repeated listening, however, starts to focus on the subtle differences in nuance, especially in the compositions. Though DeLucia grew up in a tradition of Spanish flamenco guitar, Brazilian rhythmic touches often appear in his work, beginning with the opening "Estiba." The American Di Meola seems influenced by music of the Middle East ("Beyond the Mirage"), and the English McLaughlin has strong affinities with the music of Northern India, most apparent here in his "Letter from India." Ultimately, the impression of dazzling techniques gives way, revealing the group's deeper empathy. --Adam Rains Last Edited on: 2/14/11 3:46 PM ET - Total times edited: 2 |
