Live From Dublin: A Tribute To Derek Bell is an album taken from a live concert honoring the former Chieftain who died unexpectedly in 2002. Bell first joined The Chieftains in 1972, and his skills on oboe, horn, cor anglais, hammer dulcimer, keyboards and a host of other instruments played a key part in the band's success. The Chieftains2024-03-27T17:16:11-05:000

De Dannan has always had a penchant for pop. What other traditional Irish band would recast "Bohemian Rhapsody" as an instrumental suite for tin whistle, fiddle, and accordion as they did on their CD Hibernian Rhapsody? But on Ballroom De Dannan put aside their inclination toward the contemporary in favor of a nostalgic, melancholy mood. A combination of dance tunes and songs, the CD is conceived as an elegy for the dance halls that were once the center of music making and socializing in small Irish towns. The jigs and reels are played with the verve that has come to characterize De Dannan, while the waltzes have a sweet, wistful feel. The songs of emigration and loss, beautifully sung by Dolores Keane, are poignant reminders of the hard choices the Irish have made to survive. --Michael SimmonsDe Dannan, De Danann2024-03-25T15:21:31-05:000

The Young Dubliners new album, 'Saints and Sinners,' continues on from 'With All Due Respect: The Irish Sessions,' with their unique blend of Rock and Celtic music seamlessly bound together in a high energy, anthemic and lyrically poignant mix. With a powerful collaboration with Kenny Wayne Shepherd, the Dubs move from ballad to barn burner with ease, documenting as they go the chaotic world in which they find themselves. From politics to life as an internationally touring band, the new effort from these handsome lads tackles it all with the enthusiasm just in time for St. Patrick s Day.Young Dubliners2024-03-21T08:20:41-05:000

One of the better compilation series in circulation, Elevations 3 and its offspring (particularly this third volume) are very appealing samplers targeted to listeners with an appetite for world/mystic/ambient/groove music. Showcasing 15 acts, Elevations 3 is a feast of largely stellar tracks from the seductive, slow-twitch zone of the electronica spectrum. Opening with the gorgeous 1997 New Age pop hit "Love Song," by Ronan Hardiman, the disc moves from one delicious track ("Rushing" from Moby) to another (the Delerium-like "Lost" by Balligomingo. While not flawless (we could have been spared the childlike chanting of Yasue on "Peaceful Village"), the album is loaded with gems, including the beguiling, jazz-tinged throb from Soma Sonic ("Blueskies"), the subsonic stealth funk of Faithless ("The Garden"), and the whispered-in-your-ear passion of "Soul of Desire" (by Phobos). As soon as you exit, on Alkaemy's ethereal "Enchantment," you yearn for the disc to begin anew. Anyone attracted to "moods"-related samplers should investigate this one. Splendid listening. --Terry WoodRonan Hardiman, Moby, Balligomingo, Thomas Newman, Pilgrimage, Govinda, Soma Sonic, Ikarus, Phobos, Various Artists2024-03-17T19:26:07-05:000

Solas have become one of the world's most exciting Celtic bands by combining a respect for tradition with an adventurous musical spirit. On their fourth CD, The Hour Before Dawn, they gently stretch the boundaries of Irish music by adding new instrumental textures and more sophisticated harmonies. Led by Seamus Egan's flute and banjo, the band whips through the sets of dance tunes with authority and style. John Doyle continues to expand the vocabulary of Irish rhythm guitar while laying down a solid beat that lets the melodies of fiddler Winifred Horan and accordionist Mick McAuley soar. But as good as the instrumentals are, the songs with vocals are where Solas truly shine. The band's new lead singer, Dierdre Scanlan, has replaced Karan Casey, who left to pursue a solo career. Scanlan is equally adept on ancient ballads like "When My Love and I Parted," where she is accompanied only by Horan's violin, and contemporary songs like "I Will Remember You," which Egan cowrote with Sarah McLachlan. She has an earthy voice that reminds us that despite the band's instrumental prowess, the roots of Irish music are in song. --Michael Simmons Solas2024-03-17T19:20:26-05:000

From Cape Breton's Scottish Gaelic culture comes Ln Dil, a remarkable sophomore effort from vocalist Mary Jane Lamond. While the CD is wholly comprised of traditionals and some of the material here hearkens back to the 19th century, such as the haunting sailor's lament "Ill U Ill O Illean's O," Lamond weaves each piece into strikingly contextual arrangements, incorporating Indian tablas, bagpipe, fiddle, and steel guitar wash. The result is entirely engaging, contemporary, and surprisingly grounded in historic tradition. Lamond is not only a daring arranger, but possesses a voice of great richness, versatility, and soul. "Crodh air a Bhurnich (Cattle on the Hill)" also makes splendid use of spoken word by noted Gaelic poet Jeff MacDonald. Each song is a story, conveyed to those of us whose primary language is English by the powerfully uncompromised expressiveness of Lamond's vocal instrumentation. The heart of the song is not detracted from by lyrical dissection. In the end, this is a fine thing, indeed. --Paige La Grone Mary Jane Lamond2024-03-09T19:26:06-05:000

This 1995 assemblage of Celtic (which is to say, Irish and Scottish) female artists, mostly sopranos of the more ethereal sort, is drawn from the pick of the crop. Some sing in Irish, others in English, and the selections move from contemporary singer-songwriters to hard-core trad mavens to airy New Age goddesses complete with wavery tin flutes and tsunamis of synth wash. A newcomer to Celtic music will find the selections enjoyable and the liner notes by Fiona Ritchie and Caitlin Ni Bheagain speak knowledgeably about where it all came from and why it matters. However, compilations of music by women have become too ubiquitous over the past few years, milking a tiresome marketing concept for all it's worth. To be fair, this was an early entry and the producers very likely meant well. But these brilliant artists deserve better than to be lumped together by gender. --Christina Roden Various Artists2024-03-09T16:59:35-05:000
