This Georgia band of self-proclaimed good ol' boys either suffers from a split personality or has an expansive idea of what its market might be. While the generic bluster of "I'm a Country Boy" suggests Lynyrd Skynyrd wannabes, the lighter, harmony-laden evocations of youthful impetuosity ("Call Me Crazy") and innocence ("Summer of Love") skew closer to Tim McGraw. Between those extremes are a jukebox rocker ("Dixie Boy Special"), a cruisin' anthem ("Hey Baby") and even a bit of beyond-the-law country funk ("Gravy"). The soulful (Allmanesque?) balladry of "All This Love" and "Tell Me" shows more emotional depth and musical maturity than the rest. Even good ol' boys must grow up and find themselves sometime. --Don McLeese

Kenny Chesney may work the Jimmy Buffett mojo a little too hard on his CMA Award-winning album, When the Sun Goes Down. But he comes by it naturally, having vacationed at Myrtle Beach as a child and today owning a home in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Now comes his all-out island salute, Be As You Are (Songs from an Old Blue Chair), which surprises only in its concentration on the restorative vibe of beachfront life rather than the bikinis and rum-soaked nights. Intimate and subdued, the album gets mandatorily frolicsome on "Guitars and Tiki Bars." But mostly it's a reflective look at the people, places, and passion that make up his south-of-the-equator equation. There are lovely moments here--the cocktail swirl of "Magic," the quiet eroticism of "Something Sexy in the Rain," and the faraway ache of "Somewhere in the Sun." Trouble is, Chesney, who wrote or cowrote all 13 tracks, ended up with enough material for only half a record, and then repeated many of his ideas (particularly the singling out of the ÉmigrÉs who came to the islands to become whole again) to fill out the album. A decade ago, country acts who sounded more like arena rockers gained hegemony on a Music Row that scorned the success of the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack as a fluke. As in the past, many there couldn't see the forest for the trees. Both Bentley's own rootsy self-titled debut and Gretchen Wilson's Here for the Party prove quality modern traditionalism still sells. Bentley's sophomore album offers more straight-ahead amalgams of bluegrass, '60s Bakersfield, and raw barroom fare like the Waylonesque "Got a Lot of Leavin' Left to Do" and the beer-guzzling anthem "Domestic, Light, and Cold." He shows real depth on the sensual "Come a Little Closer." The moving, timeless "Gonna Get There Someday," a tale of a son at his mother's grave vowing to make something of himself, easily trumps the album's clichÉ-ridden title song, as does his fetching treatment of friend Del McCoury's "Good Man Like Me," recorded with McCoury's band. Bentley's lack of artifice proves his greatest strength. Again. --Rich Kienzle
