The world's #1 drum & bass DJ showcases all his influences for the first time, being it Brazilian Jazz, '70s Soul, Funk, Disco, '80s two step boogie and through to what he's most known for Drum & Bass... DJ Marky is regarded as a Drum 'n' Bass innovator and was discovered by English DJ Bryan Gee, who saw Marky playing in a club in SÃo Paulo in 1998. Amazed by DJ Marky's scratch skills, he invited him to play in London. Marky got started in Drum & Bass in 1992, choosing a more hardcore edge, but the small audiences nearly caused him to give up. At the time, he was told that that kind of music was for only a few. In 1997, he went to London and met DJs Hype and Goldie. The meeting with Brian Gee was definitive for Marky's conquering of England. In 1999, he was awarded "Best New DJ" by the British critics. With the world now being his DJing playground, Marky has been praised for his sound articulation abilities, with elaborate mixings that connect one song to the next with amazing accuracy and also for the careful choice and combination of the repertoire which is exactly what shines through so brilliantly here on this album. As DJ Marky puts it himself: "My influences are from all over the place. I have a mad record collection that has all sorts from old soul and Motown to Broken Beat and Trip Hop; it's all in there! Variety is a spice of Life!"

If Monterrey, Mexico is, indeed, the center of the Latin alternative-music universe, then native sons Kinky are doing a great job of spreading the gospel. The five-piece collective's self-titled debut is an infectious collision of wah-wah guitars, pounding dance beats, and home-cooked rhythm and brass. The band injects just enough authentic tang in its music to raise an eyebrow with the traditionalists, while playing songs demented enough to lure in fans of new-school Mexican electro-pop acts like Plastilina Mosh and Titan. Produced by British tastemaker Chris Allison, whose previous clients include Coldplay and the Beta Band, the album floats on a blissful groove throughout, snaking through styles as diverse as retro shout-along funk ("Mas"), slick, Moby-like trance ("The Great Spot"), and Daft Punk-influenced electro ("Ejercicio #16"), without overpowering Kinky's own emerging identity. --Aidin Vaziri

This immaculately conceived and packaged fundraiser for the AIDS awareness foundation is a sharp tribute to Brazilian pop. David Byrne, Milton Nascimento, PM Dawn, Stereolab, Gilberto Gil, and Crystal Waters (vamping through "The Boy from Ipanema") are among those weighing in with sophisticated tunes that will cross from cocktail hipsters to the leading edge of the mass audience. --Jeff Bateman

Titan were huge in their native Mexico at the start of 2000 but little known elsewhere. Blending a mixture of horn-driven acid-jazz with the funkier end of big beat, Elevator is a kaleidoscopic foot-tapper just right for summer days and tequila-fueled nights. With production credits that include Craig Borrell and Ross Harris (Dust Brothers, Beck) as well as Michael Franti (Disposable Heroes), these are no ordinary grooves. Opener "1, 2, 3, 4" is B-52s for the chemical generation, while "Corazon" combines squelchy Hammond organs, vocals reminiscent of Sergio Mendes's "Brasil '66," and the head-nodding spirit of the Wiseguys onto one track. The album also includes Titan's signature piece, an inspired interpretation of the theme to the '70s cop show Starsky & Hutch. "Cum on Feel the Noize" is a more literal cover, but elsewhere on this retro-heavy collection, the ghost of Huggy Bear looms large and proud. --Paul Tierney

Onda Sonora, the 12th in the Red Hot Organization's series of AIDS-benefit compilations, effects a wildly successful marriage of current and traditional Portuguese and Brazilian styles performed by native stars and varied guests. Standouts include everything from a David Byrne-Caetano Veloso collaboration to the hip-hop-hard fusion of General D and Funk 'n Lata's "Sobi Esse Pano, Mano," from Brit-Brazilian trip-hoppers Smoke City's "O Cara Lindo (Mr. Gorgeous)" to a matchup of Nana Vasconcelos and Vinicius Cantuaria. A rhythmically insistent, soothing, and utterly entrancing set. --Rickey Wright
