New to the CD compilation this year are Grammy winners Tingstad and Rumbel, Tom Grant with Rebecca Kilgore, Margie Boule, Gypsy Soul, Larry Murante, Deems and Seattle Groove, The Three Wisemen, Kellee Bradley, Kristina Erickson, Christopher Peacock and Gene Nery, and The Chad Mitchell Trio, a favorite across America in the 60?s and 70?s, reuniting specially for this project. As of 2002, this project has raised over $600,000 for Children's Hospitals, and net proceeds from the sale of this CD benefit northwest children?s hospitals - so that no child is turned away, regardless of their ability to pay for medical care.

Imagine a holiday album that's more like a series of impressionistic paintings or stark watercolors from the hand of a gifted observer and artisan. Ottmar Liebert (who plays flamenco guitar but not usually in the purely flamenco style, plus other guitars) and his three musical associates deliver an understated kind of holiday record where less is more, an audio gift with fleeting sounds and unexpected flourishes that color and shade the familiar and new. Faure's "Pavane," "O Little Town of Bethlehem," Tchaikovsky's "Arabian Dance" from the Nutcracker and other well known pieces get Liebert's acute artistic treatment . For example, his "Bethlehem" is also tagged with a side trip to the "City of Tijuana" that is alluring and electric without losing sight of the original destination. His handful of originals such as "The Longest Night" and "Winter Blue" share a kind of trance-like affect and yet never lose their bearing. It's a delicate and completely satisfying achievement that permeates Winter Rose and transcends the holidays. It can be played again and again for any occasion. Highly recommended. -- Martin Keller

The album opens with a familiar favorite as Big Al Carson and Academy Award-winning Lars Edegran put a big band twist on Santa Claus is Coming to Town. Home-town favorite James Andrews summons up the spirit of New Orleans Christmas past, as the gravelly tones of his voice and trumpet evoke the raspy vocals of the great Louis Armstrong on Christmas in New Orleans. Other tunes get new twists as a bevy of notable musicians put their signature touches on the holiday classics: Ellis Marsalis tickles the ivories to bring new life into God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen, while the internationally-known John Boutte dreams for snow to fall on the usually-warm city of his birth on his version of White Christmas, recording especially for this collection. Trumpeter and bandleader Gregg Stafford leads the Heritage Hall Jazz Band on their respectful and understated treatment of Silver Bells. Here's a disc that ought to have the title, "The Really Pretty Tchaikovsky." The Serenade has long been one of his most popular "neo- classical" pieces, and Sir Neville Marriner turns in a charming performance--not the last word in emotional warmth, perhaps, but vigorous and immaculately played. The Nutcracker Suite goes similarly well. Each dance is sharply characterized, and the whole thing sounds so easy and pleasant that you might as well just relax and wallow in the euphonious sounds. Long a prime recommendation at Christmastime, this album deserves to be taken out for a spin during the rest of the year too. --David Hurwitz

If you're already stocked up on your favorite Christmas carols but are looking for a nice solid anthology of sacred music, this one certainly has a lot of enjoyment to offer. True, a little more thought could have gone into this themed compilation. What does the Largo from Handel's opera Serse, featuring countertenor Andreas Scholl (his name consistently misspelled on the CD, by the way), have to do with the Yuletide season? No matter, it is after all one of the world's supreme melodies, and Scholl is part of the motley collection of big-name performers Decca has culled from its catalog for this release, which also includes Luciano Pavarotti, Cecilia Bartoli, Marilyn Horne, Bryn Terfel, et al. The anthology is weighted heavily toward the baroque, with a number of Bach selections and seven tracks from Messiah (another work that has by popular tradition become most associated with Christmas even though it was conceived as an Easter celebration). The latter make a sort of mini-anthology within this anthology, giving you a series of "ultimate" moments from Handel's masterpiece--but you certainly won't want to be without the entire work. --Herbert Fellows
