Very rarely is a legendary band able to come up with new, credible material. Jam band progenitors the Allman Brothers have done better than that, tapping into some of the spark that made them one of the most influential American bands of their time. The lineup has changed due to tragedy, discontent, and plain orneriness, but the band is still able to conjure up dark tales of thwarted romance, dashed ambitions, and enduring friendship and tether them to freefalling slide riffs, jazzy interludes, and soulful blues that have been staples of the band since 1969. Granted, some of the guitar solos aren't an heroic as they were when Dickey Betts in the fold, but the ballad "Desdamona" is as inspired as "Melissa," and Gregg Allman's singing has never been better. --Jaan Uhelszki

This debut studio album resurrects the spiritual fervor of gospel, gutbucket soul of the blues, earthy power of R&B and raucous energy rock. Led by pedal steel guitarist Randolph, who has been compared to Stevie Ray Vaughan, Duane Allman and Jimi Hendrix. Enhanced with behind the scenes footage. Digipak. Warner Bros 2003.

Wayne Horvitz Zony Mash - Brand Spankin New

While it's always been difficult to attach Wayne Horvitz to one particular style, this much can be said about Zony Mash, the keyboardist's quartet: They rock. They also swing and dispense a plentiful allowance of funk and soul while spicing the mixture with just enough of the Downtown blare and confusion that Horvitz built his reputation upon. As a band, Zony Mash can hold its own. Andy Roth provides a stable drum foundation for bassist Fred Chalenor, who continues to push his instrument up and over in small, interesting ways. Guitarist Timothy Young provides an effective (but certainly not a scene-stealing) foil for Horvitz. But make no mistake: This LP belongs to the keyboardist. Here, Horvitz leadfoots everything from a Hammond B3 to a Moog synthesizer, providing a wild, unpredictable ride. Buckle up--Mr. H. can drive like a banshee! --S. Duda

<img style="margin:4px 10px 10px 0;" src="http://ca.sacdstatic.com/s/90/6890/466890.jpg" alt="Bump" border="0" align="left"></img>
For some of guitarist John Scofield's fans, his best albums date come from the 1980s: Electric Outlet and Still Warm. Recorded before his fusion ascendancy with drummer Dennis Chambers and bassist Gary Grainger, these albums are primal and funky, yet also allude to the eerie tonal palettes of Scofield's onetime employer Miles Davis during the trumpeter's 1970s electric period. On Bump, Sco's world is weird again. Joined by members of esoteric underground Manhattan bands such as Sex Mob, Soul Coughing, and Deep Banana Blackout, Sco gets down and dirty, playing some terrifically raunchy guitar. Funky New Orleans rhythms fill "Beep Beep" and the Meters-ish "Kelpers." Grits and gravy get slathered on "Three Sisters," and ethereal tone tableaus impregnate "Fez" and the acoustic "Kilgeffen." Soul Godfather James Brown is also given his rightful due on the scalding groove number "Drop and Roll." Though his guitar style is now as recognizable as any current voice in jazz, John Scofield continues to challenge and redefine himself. --Ken Micallef

Think what you will of the Dave Matthews Band but they certainly know how to keep their fans satisfied. Just eight months after the release of the lavish Central Park Concert package comes another generous helping of live material, this time in a limited edition three-disc set compiled at the band's 2002 concerts at Washington State's scenic Gorge, one of its favorite venues. With more than three-hours of music and video, recorded in 5.1 audio and shot with over 20 high-definition video cameras, even fans that missed the shows will feel the mosquitoes buzzing around their ears. And it's easy to see why Seattle resident Dave Matthews and his cohorts feel at home here--the natural backdrop provides the perfect setting for their gently inspiring music. "I feel like I'm making a racket in a place that should be quiet," the frontman says at one point in the documentary, which may suggest why this is a more reverential, detail-oriented performance than its Manhattan predecessor, particularly in songs like the acoustic "Gravedigger" and the leisurely 15-minute-plus version of "Lie In Our Graves." --Aidin Vaziri
