Anyone who is still clueless about what a great singer Ronnie Dunn is need only grab this second greatest-hits package from Brooks & Dunn, a 17-song compilation that skims the commercial high points from the duo's 1998-2004 period. Dunn, the quintessential balladeer, soars on honky-tonk laments and reminiscences like "Red Dirt Road" and "How Long Gone," and on full-throated romantic plaints like "That's What She Gets for Loving Me" and "It's Getting Better All the Time." His sidekick, the underrated guitarist, utility singer, and all-around dynamo Kix Brooks, also gets his moment to shine on a marvelous '60s-style, 18-wheeler ditty called "Independent Trucker," one of three new cuts included here. --Bob Allen

<img style="margin:4px 10px 10px 0;" src="http://cc.sacdstatic.com/s/24/7524/587524.jpg" alt="Now Again" border="0" align="left"></img>
Now Again, by Ely, Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Butch Hancock?collectively known as The Flatlanders?marks the first album-length collaboration between the trio of acclaimed Texas songwriters since their debut album three decades ago. Now Again was ostensibly produced by Ely, but the album's tracks were a true collaborative effort. The songs (with the exception of U. Utah Phillips' "Going Away") were co-written by the trio, and most of them feature the rough-hewn vocal blend of all three men ("It was fun to learn we could still sing harmonies," laughs Ely). Besides the session musicians, two other original Flatlanders joined Ely, Gilmore and Hancock for cameos in the studio: musical saw player Steve Wesson and vocalist Tony Pearson. "We said, let's not put any limits on this thing," Ely says. "It freed us up a lot. We had to resist the urge to write a 10-verse song. Every line became important. We had to think about the structure of the songs as a whole. It was a very different kind of writing than what we would do as individuals." But there are touchstones that the music on Now Again shares with the best of Ely's, Gilmore's and Hancock's music: there is an abundance of clever wordplay; there is the freewheeling blend of folk, rock, country, and blues that has always informed their work; and there is the feeling of lazy intimacy, of old friends tossing music and words around like softballs. Songs such as "Waving My Heart Goodbye," "Yesterday Was Judgment Day," "Now It's Now Again," and "Down in the Light of the Melon Moon" can croon, swing, rollick, or cry, depending on the whim of the three tunesmiths. --John T. Released in 1995 to commemorate Rounder Records' 25 years in business, Hills of Home is a terrific investment for anyone interested in exploring the label's myriad folk offerings. (Blues fans would be well-advised to check out Deep Blue, Hills's silver-anniversary blues twin.) Bargain-priced and boasting a wide range, this two-disc overview is elevated over standard label anthologies by superior sequencing and worthwhile liner notes. The Massachusetts-based imprint has been a stronghold for developing troubadours and stalwart mountain musicians as well as an outlet for classic reissue material. Indeed, everyone from instrumental hotshot Mark O'Connor to Woody Guthrie to acid folkies the Holy Modal Rounders to hill harmonizers the Louvin Brothers are represented here. --Steven Stolder

In the '70s the word outlaw came to define a genre of country that mixed rock and honky-tonk with some folk lyricism and more than a little hard and fast living. R.B. Morris, a Knoxville singer-songwriter (and published poet and playwright), updates the Outlaw approach with an ambitious concept album that often roars like a resurrected junkyard V-8 (thanks to roots-rock producer R.S. Field and guitarist Kenny Vaughan) but mostly meditates soulfully on the human urge for freedom, whether in the form of moonshiners, prophets, bandits, poets, or lovers. Though woven together by a common thread of lawlessness, each of Morris's songs stands well on its own, especially the radiant "Lest We All Lose" (which sounds like a fine, lost country-soul single). Morris deserves a wider audience, not only from fans of gutsy singer-songwriters like Ray Wylie Hubbard and Bruce Springsteen, but from anyone interested in the best that alternative country has to offer. --Roy Kasten
