Henry Rollins - Think Tank (Spoken Word)

For his DreamWorks debut, spoken-word artiste Henry Rollins turns the funny-dude charm way up on 13 jocular monologues. Recorded live at 1997 and 1998 gigs in Chicago and Australia, Think Tank presents a far lighter side than Rollins previously has recorded. He shows another side here, one different from the counterculture icon--the guy with so much pain, he had to tattoo it all over his body and scream it out through rad punk tunes as the human throat for Black Flag and the Rollins Band--and, surprisingly, the lighter Rollins isn't Rollins Lite. The 30-something performer has found his ultimate calling as a caring but angry Über-punk who's on your side in the fight against evil. Channeling his rage into prosaic humor, Rollins details the really big problems of life (homophobia, lyrics to Journey songs, racism, vegetarians) and small everyday bummers (the cast of Friends, idiots everywhere, fax machines) alongside detailed postcards from the rock-star life. --Mike McGonigal

Veggietales - Junior's Bedtime Songs

As bedtime snuggle-partners go, a stalk of asparagus may rate only slightly higher than a porcupine or cactus. But Junior Asparagus, the VeggieTales cartoon, takes getting tucked in one step further. Together with his sweet-voiced Mommy Asparagus and a chorus of kid friends, he serenades with a 15-song slumber party that, come lights-out for little aspara-guy, severs itself into split-track format so at-home snoozers can sing along a second time. An intoxicatingly spare, simple "Twinkle, Twinkle" gives way to "Brahms' Lullaby" and the lovey-dovey "A Bushel and a Peck." Then the perfectly kid-friendly Carpenters' classic "(They Long to Be) Close to You" drifts us ever closer to dreamland before a six-song section of Christian lullabies crops up. Originals "My Day," "Thankfulness Song," and "God's Love" march us through a series of preschool tribulations, ponderings, and praises; and traditional songs "God Is So Good" and "Love Him in the Morning" set a compass toward the spiritual for final thoughts. But it's the last five tunes that slip listeners the heaviest dose of sleep serum. Mommy Asparagus's loving "One in a Million" and "All Through the Night" lead directly to the Land of Nod's doorstep, and the reassuring "Think of Me" rings the bell. Be it bedtime or not, count on kids 2 to 5 (and not just the cruciferous kind) cozying up to Junior and his jolly green band. The record that answers the prayers of parents seeking chill-out music for the churchgoing child has arrived. --Tammy La Gorce

The jewel in the crown in the Music for Little People catalog, Gift of the Tortoise is stunning in its beauty and uncompromising in its delivery of excellence. Expressed from the viewpoint of a very wise tortoise, the lush harmonies of Ladysmith Black Mambazo are supported by renowned guitarist Johnny Clegg and storyteller Gcina Mhlophe, creating a captivating blend of Zulu lore, South African history, and that country's brave optimism in the post-Apartheid era. As the drama unfolds, the listener is drawn into the spell cast by this marvelous group of players as they carry out the chant of ancestral names on "Two Shelleni," the folk legend of the "Boy Who Turned into a Cat," and the classic "Mbube (the Lion Sleeps Tonight)." --Paige La Grone

The star of this collection is narrator Marvin Miller, who gives an unparalleled recitation of Green Eggs and Ham (and who makes Cat in the Hat/If I Ran the Zoo and Fox in Socks/Horton Hatches the Egg come alive on separate CDs). Taking a colleague up on a bet, Dr. Seuss (Theodor Geisel) wrote and published this tale--arguably his best known--in 1960 with the constraint of using a mere 50 words. And what an amazing 50 words they are! Strung together with utile charm, energy, and pleasantly tripping repetition, Green Eggs and Ham stands up as one of Seuss's masterworks. Also included on the CD are rhyming parables of greed, honesty, and making amends in the dramatizations of Yertle the Turtle, The Big Brag, and, finally, Bartholomew and the Oobleck, starring the young hero who many will recognize from the better known Bartholomew Cubbins and the 500 Hats. This disc, along with its companion reissues, is a wang dang doodle of linguistic and auditory fun! --Paige La Grone

A delightful combination of classic songs from the past like "The Lion Sleeps Tonight", "Alley Oop" and "The Unicorn" (as they've never been done before) and original offerings such as "Buckaroo", "Skidaddle!" and "One Day Soon" from a great new artist. Buck Howdy delivers these recordings with fun and freshness unmatched in the children's music market. Kenny Curtis, Program Director of XM Satellite Radio says it best, "From Cowboys to Cow-pies, 'Skidaddle!' has the Wild West covered! Buck Howdy's resonant, textured drawl is rich with character and flavor, and the CD is a wonderful change-of-pace (literally) from much of the manic programming that leaps out of the small screen at kids today. He's either the next Roy Rogers or the previous one reincarnated. I can't decide which."

Jessica Harper - Inside Out!

Jessica Harper stretches her big, broad voice over three musical styles--jazz, reggae, and calypso--on Inside Out for a sound, rich and lush, that's unmistakably hers, love it or leap right over it on your CD changer. Same rule applies to her lyrics, which leave listeners feeling as though they ought to have signed a waiver: spin this disc and plan to be gone awhile, in effect plucked from your own habitat and planted squarely in hers. Fortunately, it's a place most parents will find familiar, comfortably so. A bundle of songs on Inside Out, which plays like a postscript to 2000's Rhythm in My Shoes, bring us into a bustling household where the family pet is a shoe-chewing, jazz-ditty-inspiring "Little Brown Dog Named Joe" and the breakfast-table chitchat seems lifted from our own kitchens and set to pleasing rhythms. For instance, "Four Boys Named Jordan" opens with a little girl, Elizabeth, explaining her class-seating chart. Sprinkled around the room, sometimes in confusing clusters, are--you guessed it--four fellas who share the same name. On "Lizzy's Do's and Don't's" you can practically hear the disaffected drumming of fingertips--it's Lizzy's plea to her mom not to hide her candy up high and put nuts in the apple pie, among other exasperating day-to-day stuff. At times, the Harper household darts away from the daily grind to celebrate nothing special. "Happy Talk" reminds us, in reggae, to dream, and "Shout the Happiness" is hardly more than a joyous, island-style rant. Regardless of the mood, so much a part of this record, not one of the songs is weak musically. For young families in a funk, it's a friendly, highly original reminder to at least keep it light when you can't kick up your heels. --Tammy La Gorce
