Phil "Philthy Animal" Taylor was born September 21, 1954, in Chesterfield, England. He replaced original
Motörhead drummer
Lucas Fox midway through recording the band's self-titled 1977 debut album; following completion of the 1980 classic Ace of Spades,
Taylor broke his neck during a melee with a fan, sidelining him for the better part of a year. He left the group in 1984 and was replaced by
Saxon drummer
Pete Gill; in 1987,
Taylor returned to the
