Album Review
Trumpeter Chet Baker and altoist Art Pepper had parallel lives. Both were among the brightest new voices in jazz in the 1950s and had the potential to become matinee idols. Both were also drug addicts and spent much time in the '60s and early '70s off the scene, with Pepper in and out of jail while Baker had his teeth knocked out. And both made improbable comebacks late in life, playing at their best during their final period despite the odds. They only recorded together on four occasions, all during 1956-1957 and reissued on this two-CD set. The complete contents of the albums The Route and Playboys (also known as Picture of Heath) are here along with four selections from Chet Baker Big Band and five from the Jack Sheldon Big Band's Jack's Groove. Baker and Pepper excel in each setting, particularly the sextet dates which also feature either Richie Kamuca or Phil Urso on tenors. The co-leaders display complementary styles, there are no Baker vocals, and the results are high-quality cool-toned hard bop from two of the greats. This music, formerly scattered over many releases, when heard in one setting, is a bit of a revelation and contains many moments of subtle surprises, excitement and enjoyment. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
