Album Review
Released by Blue Note Japan, this double-disc set contains both volumes of the Genius of Modern Music albums recorded by Thelonious Monk in 1947 and 1952 and released by the Blue Note label on 10" discs before the advent of the 12" LP. These CDs also contains all existing alternate and unreleased takes from those recording sessions. That said, these are not Monk's complete recordings for Blue Note, which exist in two separate boxes from the label and the long out of print Mosaic imprint. Nonetheless, for anyone deeply interested in the composer and pianist's process, these sessions showcase Monk in commanding company as a bandleader. Other notables who appear here are jazz greats Art Blakey, Max Roach, Shadow Wilson, Idrees Sulieman, Sahib Shihab, Lucky Thompson, and Lou Donaldson, to name just a few. Given the price tag on this set, it is recommended that the earnest consumer take note of the U.S. Blue Note label's The Complete Blue Note Recordings, which contains four discs and an extended annotated booklet -- it generally sells for a far less dear price point. ~ Thom Jurek, All Music Guide
