Album Review
Ruth Brown is a revered soul and r&b singer who deserves not only every bit of acclaim she's received, but more. This late period recording, issued on Passport Audio from a 2006 session, proves that Brown still has not only the chops but the credibility to deserve a top-notch backing group, as well. The material here is made of up classics, from the Beatles' "Yesterday," to "Please Send Me Someone to Love," to "This Bitter Earth." The band she has backing her included Eric Gale, Richard Tee, Chuck Rainey, Herb Lovelle, and Billy Butler! In addition, she also employs the Howard Roberts Chorale as a backing vocal team. The hinge point on the record is the seven-plus minute "Miss Brown's Blues," where Brown wails and whispers and her band just cuts it up. Recommended. ~ Thom Jurek, All Music Guide
