Although this project is led by drummer Ray Appleton, organist Melvin Rhyne is the main star. Rhyne was formerly Wes Montgomery's organist, and the spirit of Montgomery can be felt throughout this swinging set. Ilya Lushtak does an excellent job of filling in for Montgomery (without trying to sound like his duplicate); Appleton works well with the congas of Milton Cardona; and Rhyne is in top form, whether soloing or backing the guitarist. The repertoire, which includes two Wes Montgomery songs, two originals by Rhyne, an obscurity by Barry Harris and four jazz standards, perfectly fit this '60s-style soul-jazz quartet.
