Album Review
With three albums in one, For Lovers: Billie Holiday/Nina Simone/Sarah Vaughan presents an attractive package, especially in comparison to having to buy the individual Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, and Sarah Vaughan editions. The songs for each singer were chosen to highlight each one's more romantic side (there's no "Strange Fruit" or "Mississippi Goddamn" here), so there's a lot of sentimentality and violin playing, but as long as the recording quality is good (which it is), it's hard to go terribly wrong with three such great artists. Yes, there are better records and compilations of each singer available, but the For Lovers triptych still does each one justice, and it's nice to hear the three together, in order to better appreciate the gifts of each ( Holiday's "I Wished on the Moon," Simone's "Wild Is the Wind," and Vaughan's "Embraceable You," just to name a few). ~ Marisa Brown, All Music Guide
