1989's Rainforest combines Robert Rich's fine compositional ability and just-intonation approach and a spectrum of ethnic influences into a musical evocation of the rain forest. Synthesizers, African thumb pianos, marimbas, gamelans and bamboo flute join in polyrhythmic, textural pieces like "Mbira" and "Drumsong." Rich's compositional skill gives "The Forest Dreams of Bach" transcultural appeal, mixing counterpoint and a Bach-like progression with a gamelan processional rhythm.
